WCV receives £18,000 grant

 30/11/2007

Weymouth Community Volunteers in St Mary Street is celebrating following receipt of £18,480 towards its core running costs for the Centre. The grant has been made by the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales through its Community Open Programme.

At the heart of the town centre, Weymouth Community Volunteers focuses on supporting 84 people with mental health problems, working with each person to create an individually tailored plan including personal IT tutoring and skills development through volunteering. It aims to provide an inclusive environment which is easily accessible via local bus routes. WCV hopes to enable people with mental health problems to progress towards IT qualifications and potential employment.

Susan Follan, manager at Weymouth Community Volunteers said, “We are delighted to receive the funds as it will fill a twelve month hole. The grant will enable us to develop volunteer opportunities further. We recently moved into a larger building and we will now be able to run more user-led projects working with other partners in the area. We’re looking forward to helping build futures for everyone who attends the Centre.”

Trevor Smale, South West manager for the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales commented, “We have previously supported the WCV which is clearly well regarded locally. It has the potential to soon be supporting up to 200 people with mental health problems; we are delighted to continue our support.”
