Charities in South Wales share grants worth £125,000

 28/10/2008

Four charities from Newport and Bridgend are celebrating this week as they have secured funding worth a total of nearly £125,000. The grants were made by the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales through their Community Programme to support small and medium underfunded charities that help disadvantaged people play a fuller role in their community of their choice.

Newport Women’s Aid provides support, information and where necessary, a refuge for women dealing with domestic abuse. The Lloyds TSB Foundation grant of £30,000 will allow the charity to employ an additional outreach worker to help women break the cycle of violence in abusive relationships and rebuild the lives of families who have faced domestic abuse.

Julie Guile, manager of Newport Women’s Aid, discussed the grant, “Funding from the Lloyds TSB Foundation will enable us to provide practical and emotional support to women and children in the community and help rebuild lives devastated by domestic violence.”

The Creation Community Development Trust based at the Blaengarw Workmen’s Hall in Bridgend has received £35,000 towards the salary of a youth co-ordinator who will set up the ‘Thumbs Up for Youth project’ in the town. The charity will work with around 100 young people every week, encouraging them to become active responsible members of the local community.

Other grants made in South Wales included £30,000 for Yellow Wales, to support its work helping young homeless people from Bridgend back into accommodation. Every Link Counts, also in Bridgend, received £29,000 towards the salary of a project worker who will maintain and develop their work with parents and carers of people with a learning disability.

Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales grant manager, Mike Lewis, commented, ‘There is a strong and committed voluntary sector across South Wales and a real culture of community involvement. The Lloyds TSB Foundation is delighted to support these charities’ essential work.”
