Redbridge addiction charity welcomes £20,000 grant

 01/09/2009

One North East London, a charity that supports people with drug or alcohol addictions to overcome their substance misuse is celebrating having received a grant worth £19,800. The funding has been made by the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales through its community programme and will support the costs of projects which help people to move on with their life after addiction. Since 2008 the Lloyds TSB Foundation has made grants worth £200,000 to charities tackling disadvantage in Redbridge.

Based on The Broadway in Woodford, One North East London provides an abstinence based treatment programme using group therapy to support people to move away from substance misuse. The service is free and accessible to all residents of the Borough of Redbridge. Clients coming to the charity with alcohol or drug addictions commit to a two-week programme of daily meetings and beyond that time, they are welcome to keep contact with the centre through further daily or evening group meetings and counselling sessions. The Centre also provides advice and support to family members of substance mis-users, including children affected by addiction.

Funding from the Lloyds TSB Foundation will allow One North East London to run additional evening sessions for people that have been six weeks abstinent and are back in work education and training and therefore require out of hours support. The grant will also contribute to the Moving On Project which helps clients to take the first steps towards finding employment, training or volunteering after they have recognised the importance of change in their life. These projects will support an additional 100 clients each year.

Fiona Dunwoodie, business manager at One North East London commented on the importance of the grant, “Drug or alcohol addiction can be an extremely isolating illness. We help people to set realistic goals for themselves, such as taking up a volunteering placement or going back to further education and we support them in taking the steps to achieve that.”

Lloyds TSB Foundation grant manager for Essex & North East London, Jude Stevens, added, ”It was clear from my visit that One North East London are improving the life choices and chances of people dealing with addiction in Redbridge. The Lloyds TSB Foundation is delighted to support their work.”
