A Leeds charity has secured funding of £45,000 from Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales for its work with young people in the community.
The Market Place supports young people between the ages of 13 and 25 on a range of issues from personal development to family issues and also provides sexual health screenings and pregnancy tests. The charity works with about 700 young people a year from across Leeds who visit the organisation’s premises in Kirkgate for drop-in sessions, counselling or one-to-one support.
The charity’s three year grant of £45,000 will help fund the salaries of its youth workers who staff the drop-in facility.
Sally Dawson, Director at The Market Place, says: “The drop-in service we run is extremely important and often our first contact with the young people we work with. The chance to get some free, confidential support without feeling they’re being judged, or just to have someone to talk to can be invaluable. This funding from Lloyds TSB Foundation is crucial to the running of the service and will mean that we can support more young people and help prevent them from making positive life choices.”
Charities often struggle to find funding for essential running costs such as salaries and rent. However, Lloyds TSB Foundation is one of the few funders that provide funding for core costs, which are essential in the running of charitable organisations.
Pat Greenwood is Lloyds TSB Foundation’s Grant Manager for Yorkshire and the Humber, she says: “It’s all very well having great services but organisations need people to run them – that’s why the Foundation funds core costs for charities like The Market Place, which is a fantastic organisation that provides intensive support to young people who might otherwise have no one to turn to. We’re committed to supporting organisations that have a real impact on the lives of disadvantaged people and welcome registered charities to apply for funding.
