£25,000 grant for Swansea Chinese Community Centre

 17/07/2008

The Swansea Chinese Community Co-op Centre, based in the city centre, is celebrating following a £25,000 grant towards the cost of appointing a centre manager. The grant has been made by the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales through its Community programme.

Opening its doors on The Kingsway in 1996, the Centre now has over 400 members from across Swansea and South Wales. An enthusiastic team of volunteers and part-time staff provide advice, activities, translation and training to the Chinese community in the city. The Centre also seeks to encourage cultural ties and mutual understanding between the diverse communities of South Wales. Earlier this year the Community Co-op Centre’s staff and volunteers helped organise the Chinese New Year celebrations in Swansea.

The appointment of a full time manager will allow the Centre to grow and offer an even wider range of services to its members. Ms April Kong, the SCCC development worker, explained the purpose of the Centre, “We want to break down the boundaries that exist between different communities living in the area. We try to help members of the Chinese community contribute to local life and improve the quality of their own lives in the process.”

Lloyds TSB Foundation grant manager for Mid & South Wales, Mike Lewis, commented, “There has been a significant Chinese community here in Swansea for over 40 years; this grant will allow the Centre to continue and expand its valuable work helping its members play a fuller role in the life of the city.”
