£17,000 grant for Access for the Disabled

 08/11/2007

Access for the Disabled has received £17,000 towards the costs of travel for its nine enablers who support over 300 disabled people throughout the region. The grant has been made by the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales through its Community Priority programme.

Formed in 1981, the charity has nine staff who each support ten disabled people per week providing each with a half day of support. The aim of the enabler is to support the disabled person as they go out and about to regular activities that many of us take for granted e.g. attending the medical appointments, food shopping or visiting the rent office.

George Waddell, Access for the Disabled’s project manager commented, “The grant will take the pressure off our core funds, as it will cover the costs of  the enablers’ travel passes when they accompany service users out and about on public transport. We are lucky that the Metro and the majority of buses in the area are accessible, as it means that the disabled people we support are able to fully access facilities in the area.”

Peter Ellis, North East manager for the Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales commented, “This is an excellent project that ensures disabled people are not left isolated in their own homes. We are delighted to help support its funding.”

The Lloyds TSB Foundation for England and Wales supports charities that help disadvantaged people to play a fuller role in the community. Local or regional charities with an income of £1million or less in the North East can find out more about the funding criteria and grant programmes at www.lloydstsbfoundations.org.uk.
