Stonewall and De Montfort University

A proud history of campaigning

Stonewall was founded in 1989 by a small group of women and men who had been active in the struggle against Section 28 of the Local Government Act. Now Stonewall works with a whole range of agencies to address the needs of lesbians, gay men and bisexuals in the wider community.

Over the years Stonewall has become renowned for its campaigning and lobbying. These campaigns have covered a range of issues including Lesbian Health. The Foundations’ grant helped to fund a unique research project looking into this very issue – in partnership with De Montfort University – that the Foundation’s grant supported.

Not before its time

Not a lot is known about the health of lesbian and bisexual women. But even though there is very little data about this area, there is considerable evidence of problems with mental health, self harm, domestic abuse, alcohol and drug abuse, obesity and sexual health.

This research project aims to create a clear picture of current needs, develop awareness of the services available and improve the health care strategies of local providers. Central to this will the first survey ever to be conducted in the UK that deals specifically with the health and well being of lesbian and bisexual women.

“This generous grant from the Foundation has made our national lesbian health project a reality. It’s an exciting and groundbreaking project for all parties involved.  Over the years Stonewall has taken great strides towards creating a more equal Britain.  In that tradition, the work of this joint project is set to create a huge cultural impact.”
(Ruth Hunt, Head of Policy and Research)
