Location:

 Yorkshire

Grant Awarded:

 £41,800 over 3 years (2008)

Programme:

 Community Programme

Purpose:

towards the salary costs of a volunteer co-ordinator

The Domestic Abuse Refuge Support Project in Barnsley works alongside a residential domestic abuse shelter. The charity provides services to address a range of issues which will help women to rebuild their lives – from practical housing, debt and legal advice to caring for the mental health of the women it supports.

The team of volunteers, many of whom are former users of the charity’s services, will be overseen by the volunteer co-ordinator. They work with women in the refuge and also act as befrienders, providing ongoing support in the community, and seeking to empower the women they work with to make positive changes in their own lives.
